Scales, chords, modes, simple to advanced.

It is presumed that potential students will already posess sufficient knowledge of the basics of theory and harmony (note names, scales, chord structures and harmonic principles) to embark on this study and to comprehend the tutor’s comments. However further, on-going tuition from stage 1 to Advanced, is available on request.

Applicable modes and scales; extension of basic triads and 7ths chords to incorporate extensions (9, 11, 13 and variants of these); applicable modes for all chord types; construction      and application of ‘upper structure triads’; advanced concepts such as modal interchange, etc.

Creating new lines, embellishments and additional sections that further develop on the original melodic lines plays a key element in the creation of a personalised arrangement of an existing tune, whether a jazz standard or an original. You can follow my melodic development in my arrangements and compositons on this page. These can be used as personalised investigations on-line with the tutor.
