Through analysis of a variety of works by the instructor and significant experts in the field, students will gain comprehension of the processes in creating arrangements of both existing works and personal compositions. For example, one might study Count Basie’s highly effective ‘Lil Darling’ with it’s very simple introduction and ending, Maynard Fergusson’s more complex ‘Birdland’, or my own complex reworking of the radically reharmonised 'All The Things You Are'.
Customized assignments might include: Writing a review on the analysis of an existing score or recording; selection of a tune and planning a routine prior to scoring for critical analysis by the tutor; scoring short excerpts from various tunes for critical analysis; preparing an analysis of the chord structure of the tutor’s ‘All The Things You Are’ arrangement, etc.
