Truly Madly Deeply Blue

Composed and arranged by Wayne Senior 1/6/92

Truly Madly Deeply Blue was commissioned by Jazz West for performance at the inaugural Jazz Australia convention held in Perth, Western Australia  in 1992 and mounted by Edith Cowan University's WA Conservatorium of Music Jazz Studies Department in conjunction with IAJE.

The work featured WAAPA artist-inresidence guest musicians Bobby Shew, trumpet,  John Clayton, bass, and Jeff Clayton, saxophone during a big band concert performance in the Perth Concert Hall to close the convention.  Jazz West consists of jazz staff and tutors, graduates and top students. Soloists for this performance were Bobby Shew and student tenor saxophonist Jamie Oehlers. Performance notes: This 12 minute concert piece moves from slow ballad through medium swing to up tempo before returning to the original ballad theme to close. (I'd heard Monty Alexander performing a jazz ballad this way in concert). Each time the tempo moves up it first remains in 2 before moving into 4 resulting in the feeling that you were listening to 5 different tempos. The ballad chorus scored for 2 clarinets and 2 tenors in unison provides a moaning 'after hours' sound. For the body of the piece the clarinets change to soprano lead and alto 2. I wanted to write a piece that utilised high extension chords and relevant fully extended scales and a good deal of tri-tone substitution resolution.
